On October 3, 1981, in the North Irish city of Belfast, in Maze Prison, an unprecedented protest was over - the hunger strike of Irish patriots. It lasted 7 months and killed 10 people.

The first to die was Bobby Sands, one of the leaders of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), who initiated a hunger strike on March 1, 1981, on the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the British "criminalization" policy of Irish political prisoners.

Part of the demands of the protesters, despite promises, were not met, and on March 1, 1981, Bobby Sands began his own hunger strike, consuming only water and salt.

Two weeks later, he was supported by another prisoner, and after six days by two others. On April 9, Sands was elected to a vacant seat in the British parliament from the North Irish districts of Ferman and South Tyrone.

But according to British law, a member of parliament can not be a person who is serving a prison sentence, and a protest by Bobby Senza has attracted world attention.

May 5, losing weight from 70 to 45 kilograms, he died of exhaustion in a prison hospital. Over 100,000 people attended his funeral.

After the death of Sandz, the hunger strike continued and another nine prisoners died, until it was suspended on October 3, 1981, after numerous appeals by the families of the protesters and the Catholic Church.
