At the beginning of the 20th century, during a period of keen interest in the East, ballet and erotica, Mata Hari gathered full halls of the public in all countries where she performed. Mainly due to the fact that she appeared on stage almost naked.

She also became famous for her numerous novels, and with the beginning of the First World War, high-ranking French and German officers began to appear among her lovers.

In 1916, French counterintelligence suspected Mata Hari of espionage activities. Upon learning of this, she personally appealed to the French special services with a proposal to become a double agent. After that, the woman received a minor test assignments in Madrid.

A year later, after a series of cases in which secret military information became known to Germany, the French authorities arrested Mata Hari on charges of espionage.

The court sentenced her to death, which was carried out on October 15, 1917 in the vicinity of Paris.

Later studies revealed the inconsistency of the evidence on which the charge was based — the main crimes of Mata Hari were a fictional biography and non-indifference to high-ranking men, especially in uniform.
