White smoke over the Sistine Chapel on October 16, 1978, meant that the cardinals had elected a new pope. This man was Karol Wojtyla, who took the name of John Paul II. For the first time in 455 years, the Archbishop of Krakow became a non-Italian Pope.

In 1964, Pope Paul VI appointed Karol Wojtyla as Archbishop of Krakow, and after three years he became Cardinal. Travel, knowledge of foreign languages, writing books make him known not only in Poland.

But many cardinals are worried about the age and nationality of Karol Wojtyla. After all, the Pope elected men who were far beyond 70 years. In addition, they were all Italians.

The election of the Polish cardinal from the communist state to the throne of the Pope becomes a world sensation.

The pontificate of John Paul II lasted 27 years. He made 104 overseas trips. He became the first pontiff to attend a Protestant church and a synagogue. In 2014, 9 years after his death, the Pope was declared holy.
