On May 27, 1937, an amazing technological and artistic structure was opened after 5 years of construction. The Golden Gate Bridge connects San Francisco and Marin County.
On this day, nearly 200,000 people marched on a 4,200-foot suspension bridge. May 28, 1937 it was followed by the first cars.
Plans for the construction of such a structure began in 1872, but it was not until the early 1920s that public opinion in San Francisco began to approve such an undertaking.
In 1921, engineer Joseph Strauss presented his project: a combination of a cantilever suspension, which can be built for $ 27 million. Despite the unsightly compared to the final result, its design was affordable, which influenced the approval of this project.
