Willy Brandt and his "New Eastern Policy"

On October 21, 1969, the "eternal oppositionists" Social Democrats formed a socialist-liberal coalition with the Free Democratic Party, headed by Willy Brandt.

The greatest success of the policy as the Federal Chancellor was his New Eastern Policy. In 1970-1973, the FRG signed bilateral treaties with the USSR, Poland, Czechoslovakia and the German Democratic Republic.

According to these documents, Brandt, on behalf of the German nation, recognized that Germany had permanently lost its eastern lands, and guaranteed that his country would never try to bring them back by force.

A quadripartite agreement was also signed with the United States, the USSR, Great Britain and France on the special status of West Berlin, according to which it formally ceased to be considered an integral part of Germany.

But despite this, its citizens got the right to travel around the world, including the socialist countries, with passports of the Federal Republic of Germany.

In 1971, the politician was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "in recognition of specific initiatives that led to the easing of tension between East and West."
