"All members of this family of fish have very flat teeth adapted for crushing shells. Therefore, the discovery of piranha was similar to if we could find a sheep whose jaws are decorated with wolf teeth," said an employee of the Jurassic Museum in Eichstätt (Germany).
According to scientists, such ancient "piranhas", were producing their own food as well as their contemporaries: they quickly and aggressively attacked groups of larger fish and animals.
The discovery of a new species indicates that piranhas originally did not live in freshwater bodies, but in coral reefs. From there they could already get into the Amazon and other rivers of South America.
