At the end of October, workers at a depth of 14 m stumbled upon a giant animal’s carcass. The bones and the surviving, slightly destroyed skin came to the surface.
Among the extracted parts of the mammoth were tusks up to 2 m long, the jaws of the mammoth and well-preserved skin. The animal was probably young drowned in ozokerite. Scientists examined the teeth - they were not erased, as in mature individuals.

After such a sensational discovery, the ozocerite mine turned into a place of paleontological excavation. Soon, next to the found mammoth, the remains of another animal were found.
On November 6, 1907, the mine overseer signaled that another large beast had been found at a depth of 17.6 m. A shaggy rhino was recognized that sank here as well as a mammoth. The state of preservation of the rhino was better than the mammoth.

Count Vladimir Didushitsky, a famous philanthropist and founder of the Lviv Museum of Natural History, insisted that the finds be transported to Lviv on July 24, 1908.
