Sketches of playing cards in 1890 were prepared by the sculptor and artist Mikhail Mikeshin.

He was very interested in Ukrainian culture. He was acquainted with Taras Shevchenko, illustrated by his Kobzar. Also designed a monument to Bogdan Khmelnitsky in Kiev.

The artist developed sketches for playing cards for the Imperial Card Factory. He turned to the folk tales and works of Nikolai Gogol. Depicted on the maps of mermaids, heroes, witches, Koshchei the Immortal, sorcerers, watermen.

But these cards remained a project, they did not go into circulation. Critics decided that the image is too colorful and there is no freedom of style.
