International Student Day was established by the World Congress in Prague in 1946 and was celebrated annually on November 17. It was dedicated to the memory of Czech students who demonstrated at the Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia.

Since then, the celebration of this day has spread throughout the world. Everywhere it is celebrated differently. In Portugal, young people gather at night in parks and sing songs, in Denmark they spend it with their family, in Germany, they organize competitions instead of classes, in the USA it is a day of noisy parties.

As for the Soviet Union, the Student Day was not officially celebrated here for ideological reasons. But unofficially, young students have always found a reason to get together, be it the Day of the Soviet Youth in June or the Day of Tatiana in January.
