On December 5, 1766, antiquary James Christie, a former naval officer, held his first auction in London. Today, Christie's auction house is owned by French billionaire Francois Pinot. Christie's has offices in 31 countries and holds more than 450 trades annually.

1848 - US President James Polk confirms the discovery of gold in California, thereby provoking the 1849 gold rush.

1879 - in the United States patented the first automatic telephone station (PBX).

1908 - The first match of American football is held in Pittsburgh.

1925 - Eisenstein’s film The Battleship Potemkin.

1933 - after Utah became the 36th state, ratified 21 amendments to the Constitution, the “dry law” in the USA was abolished. The law prohibiting the production, sale and transportation of alcohol was adopted in January 1919 and entered into force in January 1920.

1952 - a large smog began to surround London and dissipated only on 9 December. This was a real catastrophe, as a result of which more than 4,000 people died and, according to many, became the starting point for the beginning of the modern environmental movement.

1971 - a monument to Taras Shevchenko was unveiled in Buenos Aires (Argentina).

1976 - The world's largest magnetic separator was installed at the Southern Mining and Processing Plant (Kryvyi Rih).

1989 - the first festival “Musical premieres of the season” took place in Kiev. Since then they are held annually.
