The term "phillumeny" appeared in 1943. He was suggested by a collector from Britain Marjorie Evans. This happened somewhat later than the appearance of the first collectors who collected match attributes. Almost with the appearance in the free sale of the first matches.

The very first collections contained a lot of boxes, labels from "chemical matches", produced in the period from 1810 to 1815.

But the wide scope of the phillumeny began to acquire from 1826, with the advent of the “tickling” matches of J. Walker, and the beginning of their mass release.

As for the first serious societies of the philumenists, they began to appear after the end of the First World War. At almost the same time, the publication of relevant literature began.

In many countries, this activity has been banned. The sad fate befell many collections that have been lost forever. Interest began to revive only after the 30s. Since the 60s, “filumenia”, as well as philocarty, numismatics, bonistics, philately, ex-librist, has begun to increase the momentum of popularity.
