The bombardment was used to force North Vietnam to return to negotiations in Paris. In early January 1973, negotiations resumed. On January 27, 1973, the Paris Peace Agreement was signed, according to which American troops left Vietnam (until that time, all ground combat units had already been withdrawn, and 24,000 Americans remained in the country).

The objectives of the bombing were all military, as well as other strategic facilities (railway junctions, bridges, roads, power plants and metallurgical enterprises) in the area of Hanoi and Haiphong. The operation involved bombers B-52, operating from the Utapao airbases (Thailand) and Andersen (Guam Island).

Fulfilling a signed agreement, on March 29 of the same year, the United States completed the withdrawal of its troops from South Vietnam. The last soldier of the US Army left the territory of Vietnam in August 1972.
