On January 15, 2001, the official opening of the Wikipedia Internet Encyclopedia took place, articles in which any Internet user can create and edit.

It was conceived as a tool for the development of another encyclopedia, it survived the main project and today is the largest, most complete and most popular reference book in the history of mankind.

In 1996, Jimmy Wales, Tim Shell and Michael Davis founded the search portal Bomis.com, the main focus of which was information for a male audience, in particular sports events, cars, erotic and pornographic photos.

On March 9, 2000, at the initiative of Portal Executive Director Jimmy Wales, work began on its new head, the online encyclopedia Nupedia, for which 32-year-old Ph.D. Larry Sanger was invited to lead.

According to the concept, articles in Nupedia were written and reviewed by experts in relevant fields of knowledge and underwent a complex, multi-year system of preparation for publication.

Due to the fact that the authors and reviewers worked on the encyclopedia articles free of charge, it was very slowly filled with content, prompted Wales and Sanger to launch a supporting project, to which anyone could write materials, and the best of them would become the basis for further development by specialists.

To this end, Sanger suggested using the Wiki web tool, which allows editing the database through a regular browser, and came up with the name of the auxiliary project, Wikipedia.

Wikipedia was launched online on January 15, 2001 and immediately showed a phenomenal result - in six months, it had 8,000 articles added, and by the end of 2001 it contained 20,000 articles in the eighteenth language.
