United States Congress, 18 amended, prohibited the manufacture, sale and transportation of alcohol in the country. In the people of the ban called "dry law".

The problem of drinking was the first to be seen back in 1900 by rich Protestant farmers. The “dry movement” began: public organizations, the church, farmers organized demonstrations, wrote petitions to the city and federal authorities with a request to ban the production of alcohol. But the ban was not introduced immediately. By 1920, the states were divided into two camps - "dry" and "wet."

Despite the fact that supporters of the law rejoiced ban was not absolute. For example, doctors could prescribe alcohol for medical purposes, such as headache treatment or indigestion.

The country was flooded with illegal alcohol producers, smugglers and gangsters. There were even more illegal bars and beer bars than legal ones to the “dry law”. Alcohol was served in tea cups or special small flasks.

The law allowed home production of not more than 2000 liters of cider and fruit juice per year per household. Illegal farms continued to grow grapes and produce wine for the mafia under the guise of grape juice. Half came from the mafia and the police.

Alcohol consumption in the country has halved. But the number of murders has tripled, organized crime has increased. Thirteen years later, on December 5, 1933, Congress adopted 21 amendments, which abolished the previous one - 18. The ban on the sale and manufacture of alcohol ended.
