The town is a city of district significance, which is now part of the Lviv region. The first mentions of him were recorded in the Galician-Volyn chronicle and dated 1227.

During the First World War, the Second Division of the Sixth Dragoon Regiment of the Austro-Hungarian Army was based here. In August 1914, a battle of the same name took place in Gorodok - the oncoming battle between the Russian forces of the South-Western Front and the Austro-Hungarian forces of the Eastern Front.

The Austrians lost the battle and retreated. The Russian troops managed to capture Galicia, approach the Carpathians and surround the Peremyshl fortress. Austrian troops returned to the town only a year later.

In one of the Polish archives are photographs showing the town as it was before the First World War, in 1912.
