From 1922 until the beginning of the Second World War, Dmitry Dontsov lived in Lviv, where, thanks to the support of the leader of the Ukrainian Military Organization (SVO) Yevhen Konovalets, he became the editor-in-chief of the restored “Literary and Scientific Gazette”.

On April 1, 1923, the first issue of the journal “Zarevo” organized by Dontsov was released - this date, like this magazine, is considered the beginning of the formalization of Ukrainian integral nationalism as a political doctrine and ideology.

In 1926, Dmitriy Dontsov’s second outstanding work was published - “Nationalism”, which became his political creed and the “Bible” of Ukrainian nationalists. It was in her that Dontsov first gave the name of his ideology - “acting nationalism”, the goal of which was to make Ukrainians a strong nation that could establish itself in its own state.

The nation was conceived by Dontsov as a living organism, which requires: “the will to live” and the striving for struggle, because this is the only way to defend your “place in the sun”, the creation of a national elite that can lead the nation.

In February 1929, the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) was founded, which in fact rested on the ideology of integral nationalism. Dmitry Dontsov was offered to enter the OUN Wire, but did not work out.

After the German attack on Poland, Dontsov was arrested, but taking advantage of the disorder of that time, he escaped from prison and went first to Romania, and in 1941 to Germany.

Living in Berlin and Prague, Dontsov wrote articles for the German press, and in 1944 published his third decisive work, The Spirit of Our Antiquity, in which he talks about Ukrainian society and the need for a clear "caste" hierarchy that ensures Ukraine’s progress.
