Film director Paul Ratner at one time was fond of studying old photographs of Indians. And he began to do it during the filming of "Moses on Mesa." The plot of the picture told about the love of a German Jew and an Indian woman.

“Many of the photographs I found were painted by hand, since color films in the 30s were still the lot of experimenters,” said Ratner.

Coloring black and white prints was considered an art in itself. Many colored photographs show the talent of the masters of the past. Thanks to their skills, realistic images of people who lived more than 100 years ago have survived.
