“The city was built by a commander of Greek origin from the Middle Eastern state of the Fatimids named Jauhar al-Sakali. He decided to build a fortress in which, if there was a need, people could find shelter and withstand the attack of enemies. And so he ordered to build a walled city in which to protect him he constantly kept one of his most faithful people with a part of his troops. He called the city of al-Cairo. Subsequently, Europe began to call him Cairo,” says one of the legends about the founding of the city.

These pictures were taken by representatives of a wealthy French family who visited the city during one of their travels. The photographs are surprisingly intertwined with the majestic architecture of the ancient city with a hectic everyday life.

Find out what Cairo looked like in 1912.
