Ukrainian embroidery with her “painting” has always been considered a reliable guard against evil intentions and misfortunes. In different regions of Ukraine, the ornaments were different, but they did not lose their protective meaning. Often, it was determined from where the person came from.

North and Central Ukraine
On Vinichin, traditionally, they were embroidered with a cross, a bottom, a staple, a painting, a flooring, and they also used merezhka. The color scheme was also different: dark yellow, black, cherry, red, green. Among the most common figures are multicolored squares in which several colors were combined.

Zhytomyr region was characterized by a small cross and underreporting. Primary colors - red with black, patterns - lines, octagons, rhombuses, stars. Red was also used for Cherkasy embroidery with floral and geometric motifs.

In Kiev, there were coral-red, white, black colors. As patterns - plants - grapes, hops, viburnum and others. Grapes and berries were also embroidered in Kirovograd region, they used, as a rule, black and red colors.

A small cross, often with beads, was characteristic of Chernihiv region. Plant and abstract ornaments were embroidered with white threads with the addition of small colored elements.

In Poltava and Sumshchina often embroidered satin stitch. Mostly used white thread, but you could find gray, red, black colors.

South of Ukraine

Lvivians between the geometric ornaments left empty places. So they tried to give volume to the pattern on the embroidery. In Ternopil region thick stitches tried to create relief. In Khmelnytsky region used a cross from coarse black threads.

Embroidery from Ivano-Frankivsk region used different patterns and colors of threads, so they were considered among the brightest and most beautiful. In Volyn, on the contrary - the rigor and clarity of geometric patterns. Although in the southern parts - floral ornaments.

In the territories of the present Chernivtsi region, they used the technique of a cross, a smooth surface and a twisted seam. The sleeves of the shirts were mostly fully embroidered. Often met floral ornaments. Although black and burgundy colors were preferred, embroidery was often decorated with silver, gold threads and sequins.

Eastern Ukraine
In the Kharkiv region, crosses and semi-crosses, made with coarse threads, were used, which gave volume. Used multicolored ornaments of different motives.

Luhansk oblast embroidery looked like Poltava. Plants of plants and geometrical figures prevailed.
