In 2012, on the territory of the Taman Peninsula in the Krasnodar Territory, a large treasure trove of antique coins was found - the largest known treasure of Bosporus.

Experts who discovered the treasure in the territory of the vineyards of the local winery "Phanagoria" counted almost 8,000 copper coins and one silver. The coins dated from the 4th-1st centuries BC, when the Bosporan kingdom occupied the leading positions in the Black Sea region. This is 3,000 more coins than was found in 1985, not far from Phanagoria in the village of Primorsky.

According to the statement of the head of the archaeological expedition of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences Mikhail Abramzon, this treasure, by almost half, surpasses the previously found and considered so far the largest treasure found in these places in recent years.

The discovered coins are of exceptional interest for the study of the economic relations of Phanagoria and the Bosporus as a whole in the III-I centuries. BC, since it includes two dozen foreign coins - from cities on the coast of Asia Minor and the surrounding islands.

The hoard contains thirteen centers, including Herakleia Pontica, Lampsac, Mytilene, Colophon, Efes, Ias, Cnid, Mind, Arikanda, Kos, Rhodes, and even an unknown Asia Minor center that minted for Ptolemy I Soter. With the exception of the coins of Rhodes and Heracleia Pontic, coins dating from the Hellenistic period of these centers were found in the territory of the Bosporus State for the first time.

According to archaeologists, the treasure was buried in the 90s-80s. BC. - on the eve or in the years of the 1st Mithridates War (88-85 BC) - like other large monetary treasures of similar composition that were found in the vicinity of Phanagoria, Gorgippia and Pantikapei.
