These photos show the nature of the country, its cities, people, both nobles and commoners. The photo archive covers the life of Chinese society from the 1850s to the 1930s.

A collection of 15,000 photographs collected American Stefan Lowenteyl. For his passion for his work and skill, which he shows when searching for materials, his colleagues call him a "supercollector". The photographic documents found by him have not only great historical value, but also cost a lot of money.

The photographs of the archive Lowenteyl reflect the life of a familiar and at the same time unfamiliar China. The collection brings together works of visiting European photographers: Italian Felice Beato, British Thomas Child and William Saunders, Scottish John Thompson, as well as local Chinese photographers such as Poon Lun, Lai Athos, Tung Hing and others.
