On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand arrived in Sarajevo at the invitation of General Oscar Potiorek. The Archduke arrived in Sarajevo on the anniversary of the Serbs' defeat on the Kosovo field.

The Mlada Bosna organization decided to kill Ferdinand. The murder was entrusted to a group of six conspirators. All of them were young people, subjects of Austria-Hungary, natives of Bosnia, Orthodox Serbs.

Around 10 am, the couple arrived in Sarajevo by train. At 10:10 a motorcade of six cars (the Archduke and Countess Hotek drove to the second, together with Potiorek), welcomed by crowds of people, passed the central police station. The Archduke’s car approached the Embankment of the Milachka River - Appel, where the conspirators were. The guard of the heir to the throne on that day was suspiciously cut down, the detectives from Vienna remained at home.

High school student Nedelko Chabrinovich threw a grenade in the direction of the motorcade, but missed. The driver of the third car was killed by splinters and its passengers, as well as the policeman and passers-by from the crowd, were injured. Chabrinovich swallowed the poison he had previously received (potassium cyanide), but it only vomited. Perhaps instead of cyanide potassium, he was given some kind of weaker poison. He jumped into the river, but in the river he was captured, severely beaten and handed over to the Austrians. Other conspirators could not do anything because of the crowd of people who had obscured the car. The attempt seemed to fail.

Franz Ferdinand drove to the town hall. Cars drove past the Principle. But whether because they were rushing fast now, or because, having heard the roar of the explosion, he considered the matter done, the Principle did the same as Mehmedbasic and Kubrilovich: he did not use either a bomb or a revolver.

In the town hall did not know anything about the attempt. The burgomaster of moslem began a flowery welcome speech. The archduke cut him off abruptly: “Pretty stupid! We came here as guests, and we are met with bombs! What a baseness! ”True, he stopped right there and said to the burgomaster: “Well, speak your speech ...” The welcoming speech was said, the archduke said the answer word. After reading the speeches, Baron Morse, one of the court members of the Herzherzog retinue, suggested Potiorek to disperse the streets of the crowd in order to secure the Archduke on the way to the hospital where he was going to visit the wounded Count Meritia, and to the Museum of Sarajevo. In response, Potiorek said, “Do you think that Sarajevo is teeming with murderers?”, And Franz Ferdinand decided to go to the hospital to visit the wounded during the assassination attempt.

Sophie insisted on going with him. Decided to go on the side promenade Appel. Potiorek forgot to inform the driver Franz Urban about changing the route. The driver turned into Franz Joseph. Only on the corner of the street called, General Potiorek suddenly noticed a mistake. He grabbed the driver by the shoulder and shouted, “Stop! Where are you going? On the embankment!”... The driver quickly slowed down and stopped, hitting a pavement ledge. And he slowly began to turn the car.

By a strange coincidence, there was Gavrilo Princip, who left the shop of Moritz Schiller. He ran to the car, grabbed Browning and, like a cynical and experienced killer, shot Sophia straight into the stomach, and when Franz Ferdinand (who was sitting in front of his wife) turned, he aimed and shot him in the neck. Like Chabrinovich, Princip tried to poison himself, and he, too, vomited. Then he tried to shoot himself, but the people who came running took the gun from him. Like Chabrinovic, he was beaten so severely that he had to amputate his hand in prison. According to another version, the route was not changed, and the driver of the first car helped the conspirators.

Ferdinand and his wife were transported to the residence of the governor. Sophia passed away a few seconds later, Franz Ferdinand lived 10 minutes after being wounded.

The death of Franz Ferdinand at the hands of Serbian terrorists was the reason for Austria-Hungary to announce an ultimatum to Serbia. Russia supported Serbia, and this was the beginning of the First World War.
