Jacqueline Cochran was born on May 11, 1906. She got married very young and at the age of 14 she gave birth to a son. A few years later she divorced and returned to her parents. Her son was killed in four years by mistake. She got a job as a hairdresser. Soon she met Floyd Odlum - one of the richest people in America. For him and married.

Once flying in a plane, Jacqueline was carried away by flights and for three weeks mastered an airplane. Two years later I received a professional pilot license. In the prewar years, Jacqueline flew a lot, participated in dozens of aviation races.

During the war years Cochran joined the reserve organization of women pilots and at the end of the war led it. She participated in the preparation of hundreds of pilots for the women's air force service. In 1948, Jacqueline was transferred to the reserve of the US Air Force, where she rose to the rank of colonel.

Cochran was the first woman in the US to fly a jet. May 18, 1953 she became the first woman to exceed the speed of sound in flight. She dispersed the jet to a speed of 1,043.79 km / h over Lake Rogers Dry in California. His success is due to the distinguished pilot Charles Jager.

She also became the first woman to cross the Atlantic on a bomber, the first woman to make an instrument landing, the first woman to take part in a prestigious transcontinental race. And the only woman president of the International Aviation Federation.

In the 60's. Jacqueline Cochran became the sponsor of the program "Mercury-13", which considered the possibility of women's participation in space flights. But after the flight of Valentina Tereshkova Cochran refused further work in this direction.

Jacqueline Cochran died at her home in Indio, California on August 9, 1980.
