The Polish Digital Archive stores unique images taken at the end of the 19th century at a prison in Sakhalin Island in the Pacific Ocean.

In the photo you can see the harsh living conditions and work of convicts and how they were brought to the island. On some shots there are local residents.

According to the Shimoda treatise of 1855, Sakhalin was recognized as a common indivisible possession of Russia and Japan. From this time begins the active colonization of the island and conflicts between the Russians and the Japanese.

In 1875, Sakhalin completely became the property of the Russian Empire in exchange for the Kuril Islands. Then it turns into a place of reference.
