Miramare Castle near Trieste in Italy was built in the years 1856-1860. It was intended for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg, brother of the emperor of Austria-Hungary, Franz Joseph. The castle was designed by Austrian architect Karl Junker.
During the Mexican Civil War, Ferdinand Maximilian was shot. He was appointed the monarch of the country, but the Republicans rebelled against this decision and they managed to win.
As for the castle, at one time it was used by the imperial family. Franz Joseph rested here, his wife Elizabeth of Bavaria often visited. In the spring of 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand visited and received the German Emperor Wilhelm II.
