On the island of Bedlow in the United States on August 5, 1884, the first stone was laid for the podium of the Statue of Liberty.

In 1856, the French conceived to create a monument of friendship for the centenary of victory in the US War of Independence. The sculptor Bartholdi has just returned from the United States - he was captured by the scale and natural wonders of this country. He already imagined the future statue as a huge 50-meter lighthouse at the entrance to the harbor. By agreement, America builds a pedestal, and France creates a statue and erects it in the United States.

Auguste Bartholdi began to create a plaster model of the Statue of Liberty 11 meters high. He was posed by 40-year-old Isabella Boyer - the widow of the manufacturer of sewing machines Isaac Singer. She holds a torch in her right hand, and a tablet in her left. It says "JULY IV MDCCLXXVI" - July 4, 1776, the date of adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

In the Parisian workshop of the sculptor in Montparnasse, dozens of workers began to build a 50-meter statue under his leadership. Engineer Gustave Eiffel helped Bartholdi develop the metal fittings of this piece. The total weight of copper used to cast the statue is 31 tons, and the total weight of the steel structure is 125 tons.

The place for the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor is Bedlow Island, where a star-shaped fort has stood since the beginning of the 19th century. Finding funds for further construction helped publisher Joseph Pulitzer. In his New York World newspaper, he highlighted several pages in support of fundraising.

The statue in Paris was dismantled and transported in parts across the Atlantic in 214 huge boxes. The monument was officially opened four months after the arrival of the last box - October 28, 1886.
