August 21, 1911 from the Louvre was stolen painting "Mona Lisa". A masterpiece of the world painting was kidnapped by one of the employees of the Museum, Vincenzo Peruggia. According to one version, the main purpose of the kidnapping was to return the painting to its historical homeland in Italy. As a result of this daring crime, the administration of the Louvre was fired and arrested famous artists, in particular, the poet Guillaume Appoliner. The work was found only two years later, when the offender offered to sell the painting. It is also likely that he planned to sell not the original, but only a copy of it. Returned "Gioconda" in Paris on January 4, 1914.
