At the beginning of this week, the Violity purchased a rare gold coin-an imitation of aureus. The final price of the lot was 1689 dollars. The specimen weighing 5.75 g was found near the Dniester river in Vinnytsia region. You can learn more about the lot here.

In the middle of the III century, the tribes living near the borders of the Roman Empire, was a lot of aureus Roman coinage. Tribal leaders used them as ornaments. Since the number of coins was not enough, local craftsmen began to create imitations, among which real masterpieces were obtained. It is such a copy and got to the auction.

Judging by the portrait, the prototype of the coin was aureus Emperor Aurelian. This ruler with the help of arms re-United the Roman Empire after the crisis that arose in the III century. Aurelianus won extraordinary popularity not only in the Empire, but also outside it. Many chieftains wished to imitate his achievements and become equally skilled in military skill.

This imitation of aureus is a fine example of ancient art, which will adorn the most exquisite collection.
