Ruins of an ancient monastery have been found in Britain. Historians believe that it was here that Edgar the Peaceful, a king from the Wessex dynasty who ruled in the X century, was crowned and ascended the throne. He became ruler after the death of his elder brother in 959, but the coronation ceremony did not take place until 973.
The remains of an ancient building were discovered during the restoration of structures in Bath Abbey. In some places, archaeologists found remnants of plaster and fragments of charcoal. According to the results of radiocarbon analysis, the building was built in the VIII-X century. The ruins are located to the South of the modern Abbey, they are located in the layers of land between the level of the pavement and the Roman buildings that appeared here much earlier. Archaeologists note that the remains of the monastery are surrounded by graves of the Anglo-Saxon era.
