Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru, which is located in the Central part of the country. On one side, its shores are washed by the waters of the Pacific ocean. Lima is recognized as the most populous metropolis in the country and the third largest city in South America. It is home to one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the New World – the national University of San Marcos, founded in 1551. The photos of street life shown below were taken in the summer of 1974 by Chris Protopapas, who worked on a Greek cargo ship.
