New Yorkers have been celebrating Chinese New year in Chinatown for more than 150 years. In the early 1860s, the small area where the Chinese lived was located near Mott Street. Over the years, the community has strengthened its position, being in the vicinity of the Irish and Italian districts. In the 1950s, parades with live music, dragons, and holiday costumes became popular. These pictures were taken during another parade in 1960.
