A solar disk was found in a funeral urn

Near the town of Viborg in Denmark, excavations began ten years ago. In 2009, archaeologists found the remains of a late bronze age settlement. Parts of farmhouses and structures where food was cooked were found among the ruins. The settlement was founded in 900 BC, and then grew significantly over the course of two centuries. Among the finds, special attention was drawn to urns that were supposedly intended for storing ashes after cremation.

Only 10 years later, in 2019, the urns were scanned and bone fragments were found inside. In addition, one of them revealed an unexpected find – a small object in the form of a hockey puck. The item was carefully removed and cleaned. An ancient product made of amber is known as the sun disk.

The diameter of the artifact is 3 cm, the thickness is 0.9 cm. Thanks to the fine work, the amber looks very impressive if you correctly place a light source next to it. The solar disk becomes like a Dahlia. It was used in the funeral tradition to emphasize the high social status of a person. Some believed that the deceased went to the other world in the protective embrace of the sun's rays.
