Singapore became independent on 9 August 1965. Lee Kuan yew and Yusuf ibn Ishaq took leadership positions, becoming the country's Prime Minister and President, respectively. In 1970, the active industrialization of Singapore began. The country began to develop rapidly economically, but there were negative consequences. For example, after a sharp increase in cargo traffic, the Singapore river quickly became polluted, leading to a 10-year clean-up that began in 1977. The government strongly supported business activities, which allowed Singapore to become a prosperous state. These photos were taken in the 1970s and show what Singapore looked like 50 years ago.
