An interesting lot was displayed on Violity –
an imitation of the Roman aureus with the image of the Emperor Probus. This copy was sold for 100,000 hryvnias. The obverse shows a bust of a ruler dressed in armor. The facial features are well drawn and look very realistic. You can also see weapons and armor. The inscription is not readable, but it is made as close as possible to the inscriptions that are found on copies of Imperial mints.
The reverse depicts a Quadriga (an antique two-wheeled chariot with four horses) and a figure symbolizing the goddess of victory. The talented reconstruction of a Roman coin in artisanal conditions in the absence of complex equipment is striking. Through such imitations, the leaders of barbarian tribes raised their prestige in the eyes of their subjects, as well as the leaders of neighboring communities. They wanted to emphasize their greatness and put themselves on the same level as the Roman emperors. At the auction, new imitations of gold Roman coins appear periodically, many of which are found on the territory of Ukraine.
