The first settlements in what is now Edinburgh appeared in the early middle ages. The current capital of Scotland becomes more or less a large city by 1500 – the population reaches 12 thousand people. Edinburgh was repeatedly attacked, but was successfully rebuilt after each battle.

In the nineteenth century, Edinburgh gradually gave way to Glasgow, but it remains the most industrialized and modernized center in the region. And in the middle of the XIX century, the inhabitants of Ireland migrated here EN masse, fleeing from hunger. In the XIX century, Edinburgh continues to grow: the most beautiful floral Edinburgh clock was created, a zoo was built, the Scottish national war memorial, many museums and other attractions.

These stunning images show what Edinburgh looked like in the second half of the XIX – early XX century.
