Color Holland: a vivid photo gallery of the 1890s

These photographs were obtained through the use of photochromic process technology, invented in the 1880s by Hans Jacob Schmidt.

To create the final image, from the initial negative, several lithographic plates were produced for each shade: their number was usually from 6 to 15, depending on the required color accuracy.
