Ancient sewers: China found a drainage system

In China, a drainage system was excavated with an age of more than 4 thousand years. Historians believe that this is the oldest storm sewer in China. It was probably built during the heyday of the Longshan culture. The system was found among the ruins of Pingliangtai. Representatives of this culture lived in the first half of the second Millennium BC.

Ceramic pipes run throughout the city, representing a complex system of storm sewers that connect different areas. Such an ancient system in China is being studied for the first time – it shows that 4 thousand years ago the local society was very developed and organized. Moreover, the sewer system was not a project of local residents, but was created at the direction of the authorities.
