May 1 is a significant date for the us construction industry. On this day in 1931, a 103-story skyscraper was opened with a height of 381 m to the roof (and 443 m to the top of the spire), which is located in new York - Empire State Building. Construction began in the winter of 1930, with a total of 3,400 builders involved. After opening, the owners did not receive income for many years – the premises were not put into operation immediately, some were empty for years. Only in 1951, the skyscraper began to make a profit. For 41 years, it was the tallest structure in the city, until the North tower of the world trade center was erected in 1972.

It is interesting that on the same day, but a few decades before, in 1884, construction of another high-rise building began - Home Insurance Building. It was located in Chicago. The height of the building was 42 meters (10 floors), after adding two new floors, it grew to 55 meters. In 1931, the structure was demolished.
