In the Japanese city of Kyoto, on the territory of the Sento Palace, ancient defensive structures of the XVI century were found: the remains of a moat and part of the fortress wall. The find is older than the Palace built in 1630 for the Emperor Go-Mizunoo. Another Palace was built nearby - for the Empress. Since the completion of construction, the structures have been destroyed several times, but after a fire in 1854, they decided not to restore them anymore.

The remains of fortifications found belong to the Azuchi-Momoyama period: in the second half of the XVI century. the country was reunited, moving from a state of feudal fragmentation to centralized rule. The length of the wall fragment is 8 m, its height depending on the site - from 1 to 1.6 m. Archaeologists believe that before the destruction of the maximum height was 2.4 m. The 2.4 m deep moat is located directly under the wall.

The age of the wall was determined thanks to the discovered tiles, which bear the name of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a commander who received several high posts. He built several www.thehistoryblog.comcastles. There is no information about the fortress in Sento, but the finds indicate that the building was luxurious.
