Forbidden city: the island nation of Samoa unveiled a square coin
One of the numismatic innovations released this year in Samoa is dedicated to the world's largest Palace complex – the Forbidden city, located in Beijing. The square copper coin, issued in a limited edition of 600 copies, contains a relief concave image of dragons in the center. The name of the coin "Forbidden City" is indicated on the top, and the nominal value – half a dollar is located on the bottom. The reverse side shows a portrait of Elizabeth II, the year of manufacture, the name of the country and the coat of arms of Samoa. The weight of the coin is 220 g, the length of the sides is 60 mm.
This year, the Forbidden city is celebrating the 600th anniversary of its completion. The construction of the Palace lasted from 1406 to 1420 – it was built for the Chinese Ming emperors. For hundreds of years, the appearance of the complex has changed many times, and also influenced the development of Chinese architecture. In 1987, the Forbidden city became the first Chinese site to be included in the UNESCO world heritage list.
