Outdoor education: open-air schools
In the first half of the XX century. open-air schools were popular in Europe and North America. They were intended to prevent the spread of tuberculosis. Such educational institutions for children were built away from urban centers, often in rural areas. The first such school was the "Forest school for sick children" (Waldschule für kränkliche Kinder), organized in 1904 in the German district of Charlottenburg near Berlin. Its arrangement was handled by the company Spickendorff.
After the First world war, similar educational institutions were established in Paris in 1922. The programs were adjusted to improve the health of students, and provided for regular exercise, as well as a strictly controlled diet. This movement influenced the further development of the education system in different countries, as well as architecture: new schools with open classes were built in Switzerland, England, and the United States.
