Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. During the Golden age of Greece (500-300 BC), it was an important cultural center that significantly influenced the development of world civilization. The city retained its importance until the rise of the Roman Empire. In 1833, Athens became the capital of the Kingdom of Greece. Favorable years for Athens were the period after world war II, but accelerated development was suspended due to the problems of overpopulation of the capital. Eddie Girdner's photo shows the daily life of the city in 1973-1974.
