Sidney and Bernice Clyman became interested in collecting in the 1970s, when the African art market began to develop in the United States. They were clients of the famous dealer Gaston de Havenon, for half a century they collected a not very large, but impressive collection of real masterpieces. Gallery owner Allan stone and artist Merton D. Simpson organized an exhibition where they combined items brought from Africa with the works of abstract artists.
