For representatives of the Abrahamic religions, Jerusalem is a Holy city. The first settlement appeared here about 3.5 thousand years ago. For the last few hundred years, from 1517 to 1917, this area was part of the Ottoman Empire. For the next 30 years, the city was the center of Palestine – an English mandated territory. In 1948, Israel became a state, and in 1967, after Jordan retreated from the West Bank, all of Jerusalem came under Israeli control. These images, taken more than a hundred years ago, depict the long-forgotten life of the ancient city.
