The United States Department of public works (WPA), organized at the initiative of Franklin Roosevelt and operated in 1935-1943. It was created to combat unemployment. In the 30s, the program attracted more than 4 thousand people to public works. At the same time, 20 million Americans have managed to improve their living conditions. New roads and bridges were built in the country, and art centers were founded, but WPA critics accused the project managers of thoughtlessly wasting public money.
