The island country of Sri Lanka is located in the Indian ocean. Until 1972, the state was known as Ceylon, and even earlier – Sarandib (this name was given to it by the Persians). Sri Lanka was under the control of the Portuguese, the British, and gained independence in 1948. In the XIX century, the last Sinhalese Kingdom was liquidated on the island, after which the territory of the island was turned into a colony by the British Empire. These photos were taken in the second half of the XIX century.
