In the Polish city of Poznan, archaeologists found part of a long stone wall. The total length of the preserved section is approximately 40 m, the height of the ancient fence reaches 12 m. Today it is the largest medieval fortress wall found on the territory of Poland. According to scientists, the fortification was built in the X century.
Researchers were able to find out the approximate time of construction thanks to samples of wood that was used during the construction of the wall. In the course of their study, dendrochronological analysis was applied. The found fragments of wooden elements of the wall date back to 968-1000 years. Poznan is one of the oldest cities in Poland. Due to the successful development of the X century, the settlement became one of the most important political and military centers, where Prince Mieszko I moved his residence.
