Ancient ceramics and other items were found in Chernihiv during sewer repairs

Kievskaya street in Chernihiv gave archaeologists a big surprise. During the repair of sewers and water pipes, remains of industrial buildings, pottery of the XII century and several items of the XVIII–XIX centuries (including a knife and part of a blacksmith's fur) were found. Researchers believe that these artifacts are just the beginning, and there are many more finds ahead of them.

Scientists knew that under the asphalt is a stone pavement that lies on the sand and a layer of black soil. This soil turned out to be a road surface of the first half of the XX century, covering a trench with an iron water pipe. Traces of a ditch that may have run from the former ambulance station to Lubetskaya street were found nearby. Earlier, in 1984, a 12th-century blacksmith shop was found in the area of the excavation.
