The city of Detroit lakes in the United States is notable for the fact that it once operated the world's smallest gas station. An article about this unusual structure was published in 1949 in the journal Science and Mechanics. The gas station was owned by J. M. Sauer and his sons, Roy and Lee. The interior of the workroom was so small that only one person could fit inside. However, a spiral staircase that led down to a larger room with a bathroom and a fuel tank.

The gas station was doing very well. The prosperity of the business was not hindered by a robbery in 1925, when attackers took away $ 750. The favorable location near the bus station brought additional income: many tourists were happy to take photos next to a small gas station.

The family business was destroyed by the Second world war. The Sauer brothers went to war, and when they came back, they tried to buy the gas station. However, the site was sold to the city for $ 500. Although the building was demolished, a copy of it can be seen at the Becker County Historical society.
