Among the ruins of the ancient city of Perge, which is located on the territory of the modern Turkish province of Antalya, archaeologists have found an ancient statue of a woman. According to scientists, the sculpture was made by masters in the Hellenistic era. It has reached our days damaged: the head is completely separated from the body.

This year it is the first major sculpture discovered in Perga. The find is planned to be installed in the Archaeological Museum of Antalya, but the sculpture is currently under restoration. The site has been excavated for decades. The study of the ruins began in 1946, and in 2009 the site was added to the UNESCO world heritage list.

According to legend, the city of Perge was founded by the soothsayer Calchas after the end of the Trojan war. It was built away from the coast to protect it from attacks from the sea. Later, the settlement passed to the Lydians, then to the Persians. In the first century, the apostles Paul and Barnabas visited here. The decline of the city began in the Byzantine period, as a result, it was completely devastated by the eighth century due to attacks by the Arabs.
